  • Long, Cold Weekend Brings Out Lots of Knitterly Folk

Yesterday I was without my internet connection for nearly the whole day. Of course my provider said it was something wrong with my modem, and they could be out to fix it in oh, three days or so. Well, that’s not good enough for this house! Not only that, every time they say it’s my modem? It never has been. They just don’t like to admit a system outage so I won’t hold them responsible for it. But of course, when I woke up this morning everything was back to normal and I was in cyberspace again.

The point of this little rant? Well, let me tell you. We’ve had some unseasonable cold here. So a couple of weeks ago when I suggested that we have a second knitting meetup this month due to the long weekend, it sure sounded like a good idea at the time. But then, yesterday morning, when I realized it was a whopping 6 degrees outside, I wasn’t sure who in their right mind was actually going to show up. Boy, was I surprised to find that we had our biggest crowd EVER. I was so excited that I wanted to come right home and blog all about it, but my lack of connectivity made me wait until today. So, here I am to talk all about it!

    Here’s the gallery from yesterday!

We had lots of new folks, thanks to some word of mouth. I’m glad that our group loves to spread the word!

Doris said she came because she made a personal commitment to herself to learn to knit this year. By the time I left she was cooking away on a shawl and I look forward to seeing her again soon.

Trish (Other Trish?) is a regular at Borders and frequently shows up in the background of some of our other photos. Yesterday she came to the table with a learn-to-knit kit in hand. Glad she could join us!

Lysette is the organizer of our knitting meetup at work. I was so happy to have found that! And I was really excited that she could join us yesterday.

Marie was working on a baby sweater and modeling another beautiful sweater that she had made. She’s excited to be going to the Oprah show at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts tomorrow.

Melodye was working on a Cobblestone Pullover.

Rhoda was making great progress on her Baby Surprise Jacket.

Molinda brought along the scarf she was working on that she started at the last group meeting. I gave her the instructions for Twin Rib stitch, which I thought would look great with her yarns. It does!

Me? I brought along my daughter’s hat to work on the duplicate stitch lettering. Tammy helped me get started, but I got frustrated quickly and she very generously agreed to help me with the stitching. For my part I will be knitting a practice swatch, with which, who knows, maybe I’ll duplicate stitch myself some sort of sampler.

Others who were there included Dina, Lysette, Yvonne, Ileana and Leslie. I’m really glad that more and more people are coming. It was a wonderful time, and even after three hours I didn’t want to leave.

Tonight I’m headed out to one of the Inaugural Balls. I’ve never done anything like this before but I’m excited! And I hope to have some fun photos to share tomorrow. Not only will I be able to reconnect with members of my own wonderful community of disabled persons, but I’m hoping to “rattle my jewelry” among some of my personal and political heroes and heroines. I hope to have stories to tell tomorrow. Stay tuned!

  • January Knitting Group Brings Many New Friends

Today was our monthly knitting group meeting at the Borders in Bowie. Was I ever surprised to see so many new faces! Today I got to welcome about four people I hadn’t met before.

Lisa came for the first time today, and brought two hats in progress, and a scarf. One of the hats became an FO and she was looking SO cute in it today.

Leslie came once in November when I wasn’t there, so I never met her before today. At least not in real life. But, once when she was headed to a new yarn shop, she and I swapped a flurry of excited emails about the shop thanks to her cell phone. Small World! Leslie also encouraged her friend Melinda to come. Melinda was knitting a scarf with two yummy purple yarns that I covet.

Old friends Lola, Rhoda, Dina, Tammy, and Diane were also there today. Oh, and the wonderful Marie! Marie has done a wonderful job of promoting our group and bringing folks in. Today she was excited to shop for knitting magazines with Lisa, and to share with the group that a Ravelry friend of hers just had a pattern published in Interweave Crochet. (That magazine rocks, by the way. Not sure my grandmother would have known what to do with it.)

It was great to see so many new faces today and for all of us to be together in the New Year. I’m already looking forward to next month.

  • Knitting in December

Today was our monthly knitting group meetup at Borders in Bowie. It was a lot of fun! Today I got to meet THREE new folks: Melody, Iliana, and Diane. Our Bowie MD Knitters group at Ravelry is growing, thanks in part to the recruiting efforts of Marie.

Here are the photos from today’s gathering:

As usual, click on the photo to see a bigger version.

It was snowing as we were all departing from group today. A perfect wintry ending to a wonderful December afternoon.

Tegan decided she’d rather sleep through the whole thing.

  • Great Group Today!

Today was knit group at the Borders in Bowie. And, despite the crappy weather, or perhaps because of it, we had the biggest turnout ever! I think all of the “regulars” were there, plus we welcomed several new folks… including Tammy and Pam. At one point the only partly cloudy skies opened up and delivered a fast and heavy downpour! It was ok, though, because we were treated to a lovely rainbow afterward.

Knitting is so much fun when you do it among friends, though I do admit that not much knitting was done on my part! The theme of the day was Show and Tell. Several of us brought some of our booty from Stitches, and Jo brought her weaving projects from her recent weaving class. They were amazing! And the yarns passed around were yummy. I wanted to take them all home with me.

Here’s a gallery of photos from today’s fun. As usual, click on the photo to enlarge it and read more details about each one.

Today Lola brought her copy of Sweater 101, which is a timeless classic in sweater making. I do think I’m going to have to get one. It is available now as a hard bound book and an e-book, which I think is a FABULOUS idea since the book is chock full of worksheets that one can just print out and add notes and details to it. I think this is going on my Christmas list for sure, as is the Rio bag by Jordana Paige, in eggplant, of course.

All for now, I think I am about to turn into a pumpkin. Happy knitting!

  • Autumn Knit

Today, being the first Saturday of the month, the Bowie Borders knit group had our monthly meetup. As usual, it was a lot of fun!

To view the photos in larger format, click the picture once to go to its thumbnail page, then click again to embiggen. I have no idea why WordPress makes you click twice.

Ann also joined us but left before I could snap a photo, and Carla, who was visiting us for the first time. She was knitting a sock with some Wullenstudio yarn that was a gorgeous bronzy-brown color. There was another woman in the store who saw the group of us knitting, and came over to ask about our group and whether she could join. Of course we said yes! And we’re looking forward to seeing her next time.

Speaking of next time, our group has decided to meet twice next month to accommodate everyone’s schedules who wants to get together. So the gang will gather on November 1 and November 15. Hope to catch everyone in November!

    Back to the knitting…

    P.S.

Did anyone notice that the Yarn Harlot commented on my September 29 blog post? My heart is all a-flutter! What a cool surprise that was. Go look!
