Trish's Knitting Library

Hi there!! Here are some of my favorite knitting books! I have an ever-growing and expanding knitting library. Please check back often as new titles will be added on a regular basis!

In the interest of full discloseure, I will let you know that I participate in the Amazon Associates program. I run another website that provides resources and support for parents who happen to be people with disabilities, Parents with Disabilities Online. I have cerebral palsy, use a wheelchair, and I have two beautiful children. There are more than 8 million families in the United States alone that have at least one parent with a disability. If you happen to click on any of the links on this page to order a knitting book, any proceeds will support my effort to provide help to parents with disabilities. Thanks so much!!

If you don't see the photo of the actual product, and instead see a general flashing banner for Amazon itself, please use the text link to access the product directly.

Learn to Knit

Knitting for Dummies -- This is the book that helped me "get it" about knitting. A lot of basic and not-so-basic techniques are described here! Despite the title, this is a great book.

Stitch n Bitch -- By Debbie Stoller. I love the chatty nature of this book, and the patterns are very cool!

Stitch n Bitch Nation -- This book is a great follow up to Debbie Stoller's first book. I'm enjoying reading it!

The Knit Stitch -- This book contains clear instructions and all of the patterns build on a new skill. Very hip designs.

The Purl Stitch -- This is the next book in the series. I don't actually own this one yet, but I will someday!

Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book -- I finally just got this book in January 2006, and WOW!! I do love it! It contains lots of really cool information that every knitter should know. It's a bit large, though, kind of like a knitting "coffee table" book? Still, a great addition to my library!

Knitting in Plain English -- by Maggie Righetti

Knitting Stitches/Techniques

A Treasury of Knitting Patterns -- I really love this book for its nearly endless supply of ideas for creative knitting.

A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns -- Here are even more stitch pattern ideas.

Charted Knitting Designs: A Third Treasury of Knitting Patterns -- This is Barbara's third in the series, but the patterns are all shown in charted form.

A Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns -- This is Barbara's fourth in the series, but the patterns are all shown in charted form.

Knitting on the Edge -- This book offers a plethora of knitted edgings for just about any type of project!

Nicky Epstein's Knitted Embellishments -- This book offers a lot of cool ideas such as knitted flowers and other designs that can dress up a basic knitted design.

Knitting Without Tears -- This is "The Bible" of circular knitting! Elizabeth Zimmerman explains circular knitting in her unique, opinionated way!

The Sweater Workshop -- This book takes Elizabeth Zimmerman's sweater in the round technique to a new level and explains the process step by step in easy to understand language.

The Knitters Book of Finishing Techniques -- This book is one which no knitter should be without. Learn how to do a variety of finishing techniques to give your knitted project that professional, polished look.

Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Workshop -- This book is the written companion to this video series available from Schoolhouse Press. If you can afford them, get the videos. They are invaluable!

Shadow Knitting -- by Vivian Hoxbro

Simple Socks : Plain and Fancy , by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts. I've just ordered this book; I hear it's a great one for learning basic sock knitting techniques. I'll add more info after I've received the book!

Modular Knits : New Techniques for Today's Knitters, by Iris Schreier. This book takes knitting in a whole new direction! It's hard to describe the techniques without actually doing them, but if you're up for something new, give it a try!

Knitting in the Old Way, by Priscilla Gibsosn-Roberts. This book is almost like a textbook how-to for designing several styles of sweaters. If you want to make traditional sweaters in your own way, this book will teach you what you need to know.

Patterns

Scarf Style -- I LOVE the scarf patterns in this book! If you like scarves, definitely check this one out!

Wrap Style : Innovative to Traditional, 24 Inspirational Shawls, Ponchos, and Capelets to Knit and Crochet by Pam Allen and Ann Budd. I LOVE this book! The patterns are unique and stunning, and classic all at the same time! I will be making many objects from this book this winter, and hope you will enjoy it as well.

The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns -- This book is great! It shows the basic construction of just about any type of knitted object that you can learn from and then customize to suit your own needs!

Weekend Knitting -- Ok, so I'm the slowest knitter in the world, and there probably isn't anything in here that I could actually complete in a weekend. But, there are lots of cool ideas for knitted objects that I never would have thought of before, including knitted game boards complete with their own bag. How cool is that?

Knit Hats -- This book has some really cute hat patterns! Definitely worth the buy!

Knit Mitens-- I love the cute mitten patterns in this book. I can't wait to make myself some mittens for winter.

Knit Baby Blankets -- I love the adorable baby blankets in this book. Very unique and inspiring.

Knit Baby Heads and Toes -- I love the baby hats, socks and booties in this book. I can't wait to make some of these! I've never made socks before but baby feet are small enough that I think I could get through it if I try! :-)

Minnowknits, Too! -- The patterns in this book are simply adorable. If you like knitting for babies and children, you should definitely put this one on your list!

Hip Knit Hats by Cathy Carron. I love to knit hats, and this book offers lots of different designs, shown at different gauges with different yarns. This is really a great book! If you do get this book, be sure to check out the author's errata page.

Hats: A Knitter's Dozen This book has lots of fun and funky hat pattern designs... I especially love the "Sweater for Your Head"!

Folk Hats : 32 Knitting Patterns & Tales from Around the World By Vickie Square. This book has lots of great hat patterns, inspired by traditional hat styles from around the world. A great book!

Very Easy Circular Knits: Simple Techniques and Step-by-Step Projects for the Well-Rounded Knitter by Betty Barnden. I love this book! It is a great intro to circular knitting with lots of different projects to choose from.

Big Girl Knits by Jillian Moreno and Amy R. Singer. Ok, so why did I wait so long to add this wonderful book to the library?? I have no idea why! If you are a plus size woman or want to knit for someone who is, there's no question. You MUST get this book!!

Knitting for Kids

Kids Knit! Simple Steps to Nifty Projects -- by Sarah Bradberry. I have this book, actually my daughter does, and we love it! The projects are interesting and each one builds on a new skill. Well done!

Trish's Knitting Tips

Knitting Small Round Objects Without Double Pointed Needles (a.k.a., "The Magic Loop") - Learning this technique revolutionized the way I knit! The booklet which describes the technique in detail is published by Fiber Trends and is available through a huge variety of knitting retailers. I also found that I learned the technique on my own pretty well visiting this website: How to Knit Small Circumferences Using One Long Circular Needle.

Recently, I've found a website called Knitting Help.com where the Magic Loop technique is demonstrated. Click on the Advanced Techniques page to find the video.

My Own Patterns

Cables and Eyelets Scarf -- I put this pattern together and I'm enjoying it a lot so far! Of course, my sample is still in the UFO pile, but the pattern is a lot of fun to knit.

Fancy Cabled Braided Scarf -- My first pattern! I love cables, and I love this scarf. I hope you enjoy it, too!

Commercial Knitting Resources

The Yarn Market - My current favorite yarn store. A wide selection of beautiful and fun yarns.

Knitpicks - My other favorite yarn store. This one carries tons of accessories and doo-dads I can't live without! Recently, Knitpicks has begun carrying their own house-brand yarn. The reviews are good and the prices can't be beat! Be sure to check them out.

Denise Interchangeable Needles - I love these needles and I use them exclusively. I have two sets! The needle sizes range from 5-15, and the cables can be combined to make almost any length. I find these needles lightweight and easy to work with.

Favorite Knitting Blogs

WendyKnits - This one is a hoot to read and contains lots of info on really interesting projects! But, Kudos to Wendy's tip on Cabling Without a Cable Needle. I've read many directions before, but this one was the one that caused my "light bulb" to go off.
