More the Same...

more progress on hte baby blanketOk, now I'm really bummed! I've been knitting away on this thing for two more weeks, and THIS is all the progress I've made? My goodness, the poor baby who's supposed to get this blankie will be in college before I'm done!

Maybe this should be a lesson to me. Maybe I shouldn't try to make things for other people; it takes me so long to knit and I never get done im time and I'm always mad at myself about it. And then that takes the fun out of it! I so wish sometimes that I could knit faster! And get more done! I want to be able to knit lots of things! At this rate, my stash will outlive me. Sigh.

The intended recipient of this blankie, Brandon Murphy, has already been born! He came about a month early and developed some breathing problems, and so is in Children's Hospital. Prayers are being said every day. I doubt at this rate that I will even have it half finished by his intended due date in July, but maybe by the time his mom comes back to work it will be ready. Perhaps next time I should pick a smaller project to work on for a baby gift.

Despite my frustration at my slowness, I am in fact enjoying making this blankie. the pattern contains lots of variables from row to row so it is still holding my interest pretty well, which seems to be a major factor in whether or not I will actually complete a project. I am already itching to start something else, however, so I hope I can see it through!

Until next time...

Knothing Knew

baby blanket in progressWell, Hello! It's been a couple of weeks since I wrote, I think, so I thought I'd send an update. I'm still working on the Cables and Lace Baby Blanket, and as you can also see since my last entry, progress is painfully slow! I sincerely hope that the mom in question will receive this gift before her as-yet-unborn baby enters university! But it is soooo pretty!

To recap, I'm using Knitpicks Shine yarn in turquoise. It's 50% cotton and 50% "modal" — whatever that is! (Do I want to know?) It is soooo soft to work with, but I am not sure yet how I like the feel of the finished product. This is a good yarn for the textured pattern, though, because the pattern of the stitches is showing up very nicely.

Yesterday I was sitting at the swim club, knitting away under the canopy, when a lady came up to admire this blankie. "Oh my!" She says. "Are you here a lot?"

"A couple nights a week," I say.

"Well I'd like to get some needles and come right here and join you sometime!" Yay, I think, a knitting buddy! Then she adds,"I'd like you to teach me."

Oh my. For starters my technique is entirely unorthodox, necessitated by my dexterity issues, thanks to my CP. I can't wrap the yarn in my twisted fingers at all, and instead I throw each .... and .... every .... stitch. It is painfully slow, and I'm sure would be frustrating to any other knitter. And, I have the patience of a gnat! So we'll see. Should be interesting, for sure, but I'm actually looking forward to it! See you by the pool, Jean!!

Until next time...

Trish's Knitting Tips

Knitting Small Round Objects Without Double Pointed Needles (a.k.a., "The Magic Loop") - Learning this technique revolutionized the way I knit! The booklet which describes the technique in detail is published by Fiber Trends and is available through a huge variety of knitting retailers. I also found that I learned the technique on my own pretty well visiting this website: How to Knit Small Circumferences Using One Long Circular Needle.

Recently, I've found a website called Knitting Help.com where the Magic Loop technique is demonstrated. Click on the Advanced Techniques page to find the video.

My Own Patterns

Cables and Eyelets Scarf -- I put this pattern together and I'm enjoying it a lot so far! Of course, my sample is still in the UFO pile, but the pattern is a lot of fun to knit.

Fancy Cabled Braided Scarf -- My first pattern! I love cables, and I love this scarf. I hope you enjoy it, too!

Commercial Knitting Resources

The Yarn Market - My current favorite yarn store. A wide selection of beautiful and fun yarns.

Knitpicks - My other favorite yarn store. This one carries tons of accessories and doo-dads I can't live without! Recently, Knitpicks has begun carrying their own house-brand yarn. The reviews are good and the prices can't be beat! Be sure to check them out.

Denise Interchangeable Needles - I love these needles and I use them exclusively. I have two sets! The needle sizes range from 5-15, and the cables can be combined to make almost any length. I find these needles lightweight and easy to work with.

Favorite Knitting Blogs

WendyKnits - This one is a hoot to read and contains lots of info on really interesting projects! But, Kudos to Wendy's tip on Cabling Without a Cable Needle. I've read many directions before, but this one was the one that caused my "light bulb" to go off.
